Livestock and animals

A livestock scale is a long platform with railings on which an animal can stand calmly; the indicator averages the weight of a moving animal. For small livestock, poultry and pets there are animal scales with a lower capacity and a finer readability, also with the same averaging function.

Harvest, feed and bulk

A big bag of seed or fertiliser is weighed on a crane scale under the forklift or loader; crates and pallets on a floor scale. A trailer or wagon with a harvest is weighed axle by axle with an axle weigher, adding up to the total.

Outdoors, wet and dirty

In the farmyard, a scale is never dry. Choose IP67 or IP68 for the platform and an indicator that you can hang indoors or that is itself rainproof; floor scales rated IP65 or higher are grouped separately. A battery version works without a socket, and a galvanised or stainless steel platform can be cleaned with a pressure washer.

Farm-gate and market sales

If you sell eggs by the piece, nothing needs to be verified. If you sell potatoes, fruit, meat or cheese by the kilo in the farm shop or at the market, the scale must be verified: a retail scale with the green M mark. See verified scales.
