Analytical balances

An analytical balance is a balance with a draught shield and a readability of 0.1 or 0.01 milligram, designed for weighing out samples, standards and reagents. The difference from a precision balance lies not in the capacity but in the resolution: analytical balances usually have a range of a few hundred grams, but divide it into millions of steps. We supply the KERN ABP, ABT and ALJ series, the OHAUS Pioneer, the Adam Equinox and Polaris, and the Baxtran BAG, among others.

We don't just supply it, we keep it in good shape

  • Installation on site (optional)We come to level it and set it up on your floor, and keep it accurate with an annual inspection and calibration.
  • Verified from the factoryWe supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.
  • Calibration certificate for ISO, HACCP and GMPTraceable to standards, including the measurement uncertainty - usable in your quality system.
  • Calibration to EURAMET cg-18The European guideline for non-automatic weighing instruments: linearity, repeatability and eccentricity.

Analytical balances with readability down to 0.01 mg

What the set-up does to your result

At this level the balance is rarely the limiting factor. A weighing table of stone or concrete, decoupled from the floor, is not a luxury but a precondition. Furthermore: keep the draught shield closed while reading, let the sample reach room temperature before you weigh, and bear in mind that fingerprints and moisture on a weighing boat already count in the tenths of a milligram. For semi-micro weighing at 0.01 mg these requirements are even stricter, and you almost always need internal calibration.

Traceability

If you work under ISO 17025, GMP or a comparable quality system, you must be able to demonstrate that your balance has been calibrated traceably and that interim checks have been recorded. We supply the balances with a certificate and take care of periodic calibration with traceable weights, preferably on your premises. With an analytical balance in particular that is no detail: the balance must be adjusted under the conditions in which it works, and an instrument that is moved after calibration must be readjusted in its new location. That is why our engineers take care of installation, calibration, maintenance and repair in your own laboratory. For daily or weekly in-house checks you need a check weight of the right class; a weight of too low a class makes the check worthless.

What you can choose from

The range runs from 82 g to 12 kg. The finest readability is 0.01 mg. Which one you need depends on the smallest weight you still want to see: a scale that goes up to 12 kg reads more coarsely than one that stops at 82 g.

Which brands

Here we carry Kern, Adam, Baxtran and Ohaus. These are brands we are a dealer for, and we are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate their scales.

Verified or not

Of these 17 series, 9 can be supplied verified with the green M mark, 69 versions in total. You need that mark as soon as the weight determines what a customer pays. We supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. See re-verification.

Maintenance, calibration and repair

We calibrate an analytical balance with a certificate, for ISO 9001, GMP or your own quality records; delicate work we prefer to do in our workshop, where the conditions are controlled. See analytical balance calibration with a certificate and repair with original parts. The full overview is under scale service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a scale from this page verified?

Some of the series here can be supplied verified, with the green M mark. This is shown for each model under "Available verified"; we supply them verified from the factory, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.

What weighing range do I need?

Take the heaviest item you will ever want to weigh and add the packaging or the pallet. A scale chosen with a much larger capacity reads more coarsely than necessary.

Can you also maintain the scale?

Yes. We are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate, using original parts.
