Counting scales

A counting scale does not actually count; it calculates. You place a known number of items on the platform, the scale works out the average piece weight, and from then on it converts every weight back into a quantity. For counting screws, fittings, electronic components, pills or parts on an assembly line, that is many times faster than counting by hand, and more reliable.

Counting scales: determining quantities by weight

Where the accuracy comes from

The common misconception about counting scales is that capacity is what matters. What matters is the resolution, i.e. the number of steps into which the scale divides its range. If you want to count parts of 0.5 gram on a scale with a division of 1 gram, every count is unusable. Rule of thumb: the lightest part you want to count should be well above the division, preferably by a factor of ten or more. Also pay attention to the variation in piece weight: with parts that differ in weight, such as castings or natural products, the count drifts with large quantities. Better models automatically correct the reference weight as you top up. Never make the reference sample too small either; ten pieces as a reference gives a poorer count than a hundred.

Versions and applications

We supply counting scales from KERN, Baxtran and Adam Equipment, from compact bench models to industrial versions with a second platform, where you determine the reference weight on one scale and weigh the bulk on the other. Models with a label printer or data connection record the count directly in your stock system. Some versions can be supplied verified, which is required as soon as you invoice on the basis of the count. If required, we commission the scale on your shop floor, including setting up reference weights and the link to your stock system, and also take care of periodic calibration and repair there; re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.

Related categories

For checkweighing against an upper and lower limit you need a checkweighing scale. If you weigh heavier units, take a look at the bench scales or floor scales. For periodic checking of your counting scale, Weighing Experts supplies check weights.

What you can choose from

The range runs from 300 g to 600 kg. The finest readability is 1 mg. Which one you need depends on the smallest weight you still want to see: a scale that goes up to 600 kg reads more coarsely than one that stops at 300 g.

Which brands

Here we carry Kern, Baxtran, Adam and Ohaus. These are brands we are a dealer for, and we are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate their scales.

Verified or not

Of these 23 series, 8 can be supplied verified with the green M mark, 45 versions in total. You need that mark as soon as the weight determines what a customer pays. We supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. See re-verification.

Maintenance, calibration and repair

What we sell, we also maintain. You can have a counting scale calibrated with a certificate or repaired with original parts by us; if it is verified, re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. More under scale service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a scale from this page verified?

Some of the series here can be supplied verified, with the green M mark. This is shown for each model under "Available verified"; we supply them verified from the factory, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.

What weighing range do I need?

Take the heaviest item you will ever want to weigh and add the packaging or the pallet. A scale chosen with a much larger capacity reads more coarsely than necessary.

Can you also maintain the scale?

Yes. We are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate, using original parts.
