Force measurement

In force measurement you do not weigh; you measure how much force is needed: to unscrew a cap, to make a weld fail, to compress a spring or to open a door. The measured value is in newtons (N) or, for torque, in newton metres (Nm). We supply the Sauter range, the brand under which KERN markets its measuring technology: from simple spring balances to digital force gauges, torque testers and complete force test stands.

Force measurement: tension, compression and torque

Which type suits your measurement

A spring balance is mechanical, lasts for years and needs no battery; good enough for a check expressed as a percentage. A digital force gauge holds the peak value, which is exactly what you want in a break test — the highest force cannot be read at the moment of failure. A force test stand performs the movement evenly, by hand or motorised, so that two measurements are comparable; pulling by hand gives a different value every time. A torque tester measures the tightening or loosening torque of caps, child-resistant closures, nuts and tools.

Calibration

Force gauges are not subject to legal verification — that applies to weighing instruments used in trade — but they do drift. Anyone who records measured values in a quality system has the instrument calibrated periodically against a traceable standard. Weighing Experts provides calibration and maintenance, including for instruments you have bought elsewhere.

What you can choose from

A digital force gauge (including the FM, FH, FK and FL) measures tensile and compressive force in newtons: from a few newtons for a switch or fastener up to 100 kN with an external load cell. For repeatable tests, mount the gauge on a force test stand: manual with the TVL or TVP, motorised with the TVM, TVO or TVS. You will also find mechanical spring balances from 1 N, Shore hardness testers for plastics and rubber, and torque meters for measuring torque.

Help with choosing

Maintenance, calibration and repair

What we sell, we also maintain: we repair force gauges and force test stands with original parts, and you choose a calibration certificate with the model. See repair with original parts and scale service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get a calibration certificate with a force gauge?

Yes, you can; you select it with the model. We calibrate force gauges and supply the certificate with them.

Can you also maintain a force gauge?

Yes. We repair and recalibrate force gauges and test stands.
