School scales

A scale in a classroom has to withstand knocks, be easy to understand and last for years in changing hands. We supply two types for this: mechanical triple beam balances from OHAUS, and robust digital models from KERN. The range runs from 100 g to 12 kg, with divisions from 0.001 g.

School scales for the practical classroom

Mechanical or digital

A mechanical balance — the Triple Beam and the Cent-O-Gram — shows what weighing really is: the pupil slides weights until the beam balances. There is no battery inside, it lasts for decades and it cannot lose its zero because someone used it wrongly. A digital scale is faster and reads more finely, which saves time when the practical is about something other than weighing itself. For teaching the concept of mass the mechanical balance works better; for chemistry experiments the digital one.

Calibration

School scales do not need to be verified — nothing is sold with them. But every instrument drifts, and a class does not notice. A set of check weights in the cupboard and a check once a year keeps practical results usable. Weighing Experts also provides calibration and repair of existing instruments.

What there is to choose from

The range runs from 100 g to 12 kg. The finest readability is 1 mg. Which one you need depends on the smallest weight you still want to see: a scale that goes up to 12 kg reads more coarsely than one that stops at 100 g.

Which brands

Here we carry Ohaus and Kern. These are brands we are a dealer for, and we are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate their scales.

Maintenance, calibration and repair

What we sell, we also maintain. You can have a school scale calibrated with a certificate or repaired with original parts by us. More under scale service.

Frequently asked questions

What weighing range do I need?

Take the heaviest item you will ever want to weigh and add the packaging or the pallet. A scale chosen with a much larger capacity reads more coarsely than necessary.

Can you also maintain the scale?

Yes. We are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate, using original parts.
