Scales for retail and food sales

Scales for the shop: legal for trade, with price computing, receipt printer or label, for anyone who sells by weight at the counter or on the market.

Selling by weight requires verification

Butcher, baker, cheese shop, greengrocer, fishmonger, nut bar, market stall: wherever the customer pays for what the scale shows, the instrument must be verified. It then carries the green M mark and an accuracy class, usually Class III, and the seals must not be broken. A scale without that mark is not permitted at the counter, however accurate it may be. All versions that can be supplied verified are listed under verified scales.

Price computing, with receipt or label

A retail scale calculates the price and shows it to the customer on a second display. If you want a receipt, choose a version with a printer; if you want a label on the pack with weight, price, barcode and best-before date, choose a label printing scale. The latter is also the scale for prepacking: the weight is then already on the pack before it goes into the display counter. A link to the till prevents the amount being retyped.

Prepacking and the e-mark

If you prepack goods yourself, the rules for prepackages apply: the average must be correct and only a small proportion may be below the stated quantity. A checkweighing scale or a label printing scale with sample checking keeps track of this. What must be on the label is explained in labelling fresh products.

Re-verification and the seals

After a repair to the weighing mechanism, a verified scale must be inspected and marked again before you can sell with it. We supply scales verified from the factory; re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. We are authorised by KERN, Adam, OHAUS, Baxtran and Gram to repair and recalibrate their instruments, including models we no longer sell. See having a scale re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

Which scale do I need for a butcher's or cheese shop?

A verified price computing retail scale of 6 to 15 kg, Class III, with a customer display. If you want a receipt or a label, choose a version with a printer.

How can I tell whether a scale is verified?

The data plate shows an M in a rectangle next to the CE mark, with the year and the number of the inspection body, and the seals are intact. If that is missing, you may not sell with it.

Can I sell at the market with an ordinary kitchen scale?

No. As soon as the customer pays for the displayed weight, a verified scale is mandatory, including at a market stall or for farm-gate sales.

Can the scale be connected to my till system?

Yes, most retail scales have a connection for the till. Tell us which till system you use and we will check which version connects to it.
