A load cell is the component that converts the force of a load into an electrical signal. You buy one separately when you build a weighing system into something that is not a scale: a silo, a mixing vessel, a conveyor belt, a mobile frame or an existing structure that no platform fits under. Our KERN range runs from 300 g to 30 tonnes, mostly in stainless steel and up to IP68.
We don't just supply it, we keep it in good shape
- Installation on site (optional)We come to level it and set it up on your floor, and keep it accurate with an annual inspection and calibration.
- Verified from the factoryWe supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.
- Calibration certificate for ISO, HACCP and GMPTraceable to standards, including the measurement uncertainty - usable in your quality system.
- Calibration to EURAMET cg-18The European guideline for non-automatic weighing instruments: linearity, repeatability and eccentricity.

Load cells: the measurement itself, for building in
What to look for when choosing
The design follows from the structure. A bending beam sits under a platform of modest size; a shear beam carries the corners of a large hopper or silo; a compression load cell takes heavy vertical loads. Allow for more than the load. With four support points the load is rarely evenly distributed, and a dynamic load — a vessel being filled, a trolley driving onto it — peaks above the static weight. So choose a capacity well above the calculated distribution. The IP rating of the cable counts too: an IP68 cell with a gland that is not sealed is not an IP68 system. Four cells need a junction box, in which the corners are balanced against each other.
Legal-for-trade weighing with your own load cells
If you want to invoice or deliver with a self-built weighing system, the whole system must be verified. Choose cells with OIML approval in the right accuracy class — C3 is the usual one for industrial applications — and have the initial verification carried out once the system has been built. Verification is arranged through the manufacturer; Weighing Experts provides calibration and inspection on site.
Related categories
Load cells need a weighing indicator to read the signal. If you are not looking for components but for a complete instrument, take a look at the floor scales or the crane and hanging scales. For checking the finished system, Weighing Experts supplies check weights of up to two tonnes.
What you can choose from
The range runs from 300 g to 30 tonnes rated load per load cell. Which one you need depends on the weight per support point and the design of your construction.
Maintenance, calibration and repair
We replace a damaged load cell or a faulty indicator with original parts; we then readjust the scale and check it with test weights. See replacing a load cell and faults and calibration with a certificate; for weighbridges and silos, weighbridge and silo weighing.
Frequently asked questions
Which load cell suits my construction?
That depends on the load per support point, the design and the environment. Call us with the dimensions and the weight and we will work it out with you.
Can I weigh legal for trade with individual load cells?
Only if the entire weighing system, load cells and indicator together, is verified as a whole. That verification is carried out by the manufacturer.
Can you also maintain a weighing system with load cells?
Yes. We repair and recalibrate weighing systems on site.
