Precision balances

A precision balance sits between the analytical balance and the bench scale. It reads in thousandths or hundredths of a gram, but often carries a few kilos to a few tens of kilos — a combination that an analytical balance does not offer and a bench scale cannot achieve. Our range runs from 50 g to 65 kg, with divisions from 0.001 g to 1 g, from KERN, Baxtran, OHAUS and Adam Equipment.

We don't just supply it, we keep it in good shape

  • Installation on site (optional)We come to level it and set it up on your floor, and keep it accurate with an annual inspection and calibration.
  • Verified from the factoryWe supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.
  • Calibration certificate for ISO, HACCP and GMPTraceable to standards, including the measurement uncertainty - usable in your quality system.
  • Calibration to EURAMET cg-18The European guideline for non-automatic weighing instruments: linearity, repeatability and eccentricity.

Precision balances: fine readability without sacrificing range

Where the line with laboratory and analytical balances lies

That distinction often leads people to buy the wrong instrument. Do not look at the name but at the ratio between range and division. If you need milligrams on a sample of a few grams, you need an analytical balance with a draught shield. If you weigh hundreds of grams to kilos and a hundredth of a gram is enough, this is your category. If it is about internal or external calibration and the set-up in a laboratory, take a look at the laboratory balances.

What to look for when choosing

Division and range go together. A balance that goes up to 30 kg and reads 0.001 g does not exist; the larger the range, the coarser the smallest step. Choose the smallest range that still accommodates your heaviest weighing. Internal calibration saves manual work: the instrument adjusts itself when the temperature changes, and you will notice that in a room without climate control. A draught shield is no luxury but a necessity from 0.001 g; below that limit the ventilation blows your measurement away. Below-balance weighing — a hook under the instrument — is needed for density determination or for a load that does not fit on the pan.

Verified or with a calibration certificate

If you charge on the basis of the weighed result, the balance must be verified; a large part of our range can be supplied in a verified M version. If you weigh for internal checks or for a quality system, a calibration certificate is sufficient and verification is not required. We supply balances verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. What you can choose from

The range runs from 50 g to 65 kg. The finest readability is 0.01 mg. Which one you need depends on the smallest weight you still want to see: a scale that goes up to 65 kg reads more coarsely than one that stops at 50 g.

Which brands

Here we carry Kern, Baxtran, Adam and Ohaus. These are brands we are a dealer for, and we are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate their scales.

Verified or not

Of these 53 series, 24 can be supplied verified with the green M mark, 218 versions in total. You need that mark as soon as the weight determines what a customer pays. We supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. See re-verification.

Maintenance, calibration and repair

We calibrate a precision balance with a certificate, for ISO 9001, GMP or your own quality records; delicate work we prefer to do in our workshop, where the conditions are controlled. See precision balance calibration with a certificate and repair with original parts. The full overview is under scale service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a scale from this page verified?

Some of the series here can be supplied verified, with the green M mark. This is shown for each model under "Available verified"; we supply them verified from the factory, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.

What weighing range do I need?

Take the heaviest item you will ever want to weigh and add the packaging or the pallet. A scale chosen with a much larger capacity reads more coarsely than necessary.

Can you also maintain the scale?

Yes. We are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate, using original parts.
