Scales for healthcare: hospital, practice and clinic

Scales for healthcare: personal scales up to 300 kg, baby scales, chair and wheelchair scales. Verified, because a weight that determines a treatment has to be right.

When a medical scale must be verified

If a patient is weighed to make a diagnosis, monitor a treatment or determine a dosage, the scale must be verified. That applies to the hospital, the GP surgery, the childcare setting with a health-check function, the care home and the dietitian. Such a scale is a medical device with a measuring function, carries the green M mark and an accuracy class (III or IIII), and is inspected again after repair. All verified versions are listed under verifiable medical scales.

Which scale for which patient

A person scale with height measure for the consulting room; a platform scale with handrail for those who are unsteady on their feet; a chair scale for those who cannot stand; a wheelchair scale with ramp that deducts the weight of the chair; and a baby scale with a readability of 5 or 10 grams for infants. The full range is listed under medical scales. Bariatric versions weigh up to 300 kg.

Hygiene and use

A smooth, removable platform without seams, a display that can be read from a distance and a BMI function are not luxuries but everyday convenience. On a ward without a free socket, choose a battery-powered version; battery-powered medical scales are listed separately. For electronic patient records there are versions with a USB or wireless connection.

Re-verification and maintenance

We supply scales verified from the factory; after a repair, re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. We are authorised by KERN, Adam and Baxtran to repair and recalibrate their instruments. If you want a fixed maintenance schedule for all the scales in your organisation, we come to your site and supply a certificate per instrument. See verification, calibration and repair.

Frequently asked questions

Does a person scale in a GP surgery need to be verified?

Yes. As soon as the weight is used for diagnosis, treatment or dosage, a verified scale with the green M mark is mandatory. A consumer scale does not meet that requirement.

What is the difference between Class III and Class IIII?

The class indicates how fine the scale is relative to its capacity. Class III is the usual medical and trade class; Class IIII is coarser and is found on simple person scales. For a baby scale, Class III is the standard.

How often does a medical scale need to be inspected?

In any case after every repair to the weighing mechanism. In addition, an annual check with a certificate is usual in a quality system; we carry that out on site.
