Laboratory balances

Laboratory balances are the models you work with in a lab, a quality department or production control: capacities from a few hundred grams to a few tens of kilos, with divisions from 0.001 gram. We supply balances from KERN & SOHN, OHAUS, Adam Equipment and Baxtran, with and without internal adjustment.

We don't just supply it, we keep it in good shape

  • Installation on site (optional)We come to level it and set it up on your floor, and keep it accurate with an annual inspection and calibration.
  • Verified from the factoryWe supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.
  • Calibration certificate for ISO, HACCP and GMPTraceable to standards, including the measurement uncertainty - usable in your quality system.
  • Calibration to EURAMET cg-18The European guideline for non-automatic weighing instruments: linearity, repeatability and eccentricity.

More about verification, calibration and maintenance

Laboratory balances

Internal or external calibration

This is the most important choice when buying. A balance with internal calibration has a built-in motor-driven weight and adjusts itself, when the temperature changes or at set times. That is virtually indispensable in a room where the temperature fluctuates, and mandatory if you work under a quality system that requires demonstrable traceability. With external calibration you adjust the balance yourself with a separate reference weight: cheaper to buy, but it requires discipline and a weight of the right class.

Why your balance does not do what the specification promises

A balance that reads 0.1 mg on paper only does so in practice on a stable surface, out of draughts, away from a door or ventilation grille, and at a constant temperature. Vibration from a centrifuge or extraction on the same bench is a common cause of unexplained scatter. Static charge on plastic weighing boats is another. If your balance is unsettled and you have ruled out those factors, contact us before replacing it; the problem is often the set-up and not the instrument.

Calibration and maintenance

We can supply all laboratory balances with a calibration certificate, and we take care of periodic calibration and maintenance with traceable weights, on your premises or in our workshop. If required, we set up and commission a new balance in your laboratory, with the first calibration in the place where it will stand; after all, a balance adjusted in our workshop and then moved is in a different environment. For interim in-house checks, Weighing Experts supplies check weights in the matching OIML class.

If you need finer readability, take a look at the analytical balances. For determining moisture content we supply moisture analysers.

What you can choose from

The range runs from 50 g to 65 kg. The finest readability is 0.01 mg. Which one you need depends on the smallest weight you still want to see: a scale that goes up to 65 kg reads more coarsely than one that stops at 50 g.

Which brands

Here we carry Kern, Baxtran, Adam and Ohaus. These are brands we are a dealer for, and we are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate their scales.

Verified or not

Of these 72 series, 34 can be supplied verified with the green M mark, 291 versions in total. You need that mark as soon as the weight determines what a customer pays. We supply scales verified from the factory; the initial verification is carried out by the manufacturer and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer. See re-verification.

Maintenance, calibration and repair

We calibrate a laboratory balance with a certificate, for ISO 9001, GMP or your own quality records; delicate work we prefer to do in our workshop, where the conditions are controlled. See laboratory balance calibration with a certificate and repair with original parts. The full overview is under scale service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a scale from this page verified?

Some of the series here can be supplied verified, with the green M mark. This is shown for each model under "Available verified"; we supply them verified from the factory, and re-verification is arranged through the manufacturer.

What weighing range do I need?

Take the heaviest item you will ever want to weigh and add the packaging or the pallet. A scale chosen with a much larger capacity reads more coarsely than necessary.

Can you also maintain the scale?

Yes. We are authorised by the manufacturer to repair and recalibrate, using original parts.
