Understanding IP ratings for scales used in damp, dusty or wet environments

Begrijp de IP-classificatie voor weegschalen bij gebruik in een vochtige, stoffige of natte omgeving

Splash-proof, dust-proof or fully waterproof weighing equipment has an IP rating

When weighing equipment is used in damp and dusty environments, the ingress of liquids and/or solid particles can cause serious problems. Needless to say, poorly designed or incorrectly applied equipment causes damage to the equipment and/or the user. Water that gets into a scale not designed for wet environments can cause a short circuit, with all the consequences that entails.

An overview per class, with a selection guide per environment, can be found in the knowledge base: which IP rating does my scale need.

The degrees of protection provided by enclosures are defined by international standards such as EN 60529 and IEC 529. The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) code consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against the ingress of solid foreign objects into the enclosure. The second digit indicates the degree of protection against harmful ingress of water.

IP ratings for Ingress Protection:

First Digit

Protection against Solid Objects

No Protection

1

Protected against objects larger than 50 mm, e.g. accidental contact with the hand

1

Protected against vertically falling drops of water, e.g. condensation

2

Protected against objects larger than 12 mm, e.g. fingers

2

Protected against direct sprays of water up to 15 degrees from vertical

3

Protected against objects larger than 2.5 mm, e.g. tools

3

Protected against direct sprays of water up to 60 degrees from vertical

4

Protected against objects larger than 1 mm, e.g. wires

4

Protected against water sprayed from all directions - limited ingress permitted

5

Protected against dust - limited ingress (no harmful deposit)

5

Protected against low-pressure water jets from all directions - limited ingress permitted

6

Totally protected against dust

6

Protected against powerful water jets, e.g. for use on ship decks

With a knowledge of IP ratings you can better understand what level of protection a scale offers against the ingress of dust and liquids, which is crucial when selecting the right equipment for your application.

All IP-rated scales you will find with us are protected against moisture or water in accordance with the table above. For example, IP65 indicates that the scale is dust-tight and can withstand being rinsed clean without affecting its functionality. We offer various models of IP65, IP66 or IP68 floor scales, bench scales and weighing indicators.
